The Fiji rugby league community is grieving the loss of Mesake Ravonu, a former Fijian international and talented player from the Canterbury Bulldogs, who passed away at the young age of 22. Ravonu died in Nadi after struggling valiantly with kidney disease, leaving a profound impact on his teammates and fans.

In a heartfelt statement, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs expressed their sorrow over the passing of the young athlete, who had shown great promise during his time with the team. Ravonu made a significant mark by making his Fiji Bati debut during the 2023 Pacific Championship, a proud achievement celebrated by his family and supporters alike.

Originally from the village of Buretu in Tailevu, Ravonu joined the Bulldogs ahead of the 2022 season as part of the Jersey Flegg team. Unfortunately, his inaugural season was severely impacted by two major injuries. However, his resilience shone through as he rebounded the following year to earn a spot on the Fiji Bati squad, a testament to his tenacity and skills on the field.

In 2024, Ravonu transitioned to the Bulldogs’ New South Wales Cup squad. Unfortunately, his aspirations to continue playing were abruptly halted when he was diagnosed with an autoimmune kidney disease, which forced him into premature retirement. Despite this setback, Ravonu remained a source of inspiration, known for his unwavering determination and infectious smile.

The Bulldogs community remembers Mesake Ravonu not just for his contributions on the field, but also for the joy and positivity he brought to those around him. As the rugby league world grieves his untimely passing, they also celebrate the legacy of a young man who impacted so many in his short life.
