The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) has commended St Pius X Parish in Raiwaqa for its exemplary commitment to environmental initiatives, celebrating the successful launch of Phase 2 of the Circular Pacific Plastics Project (CPP) within the parish community. This milestone marks a significant achievement as it is the first instance of a faith-based institution officially incorporating PRF’s structured plastic recovery and recycling education into its community framework.
Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, highlighted this initiative as an impactful demonstration of how faith, values, and environmental stewardship can collaborate to foster genuine behavioral changes. He also acknowledged the contributions of the Missionary Society of St Columban (Region of Oceania) and the SEMA Group, which played crucial roles in establishing and supporting the partnership.
Special recognition was extended to Noa Mervyn Tuivunilagi, the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Coordinator, for his leadership in actualizing this pivotal project. Deo emphasized that by engaging with the CPP Phase 2 program, St Pius X Parish has set a powerful precedent, showcasing how churches and faith-based organizations can effectively serve as platforms for advocacy in recycling, community education, and sustainable environmental practices.
Moreover, the collective efforts of the parish community and its volunteers were praised. PRF noted that their leadership serves as an inspiring model for other faith communities throughout Fiji and the wider Pacific region. Deo expressed pride in collaborating with partners who prioritize dignity, values, and community in efforts toward a circular economy.
CPP Phase 2 is being implemented in partnership with ANZPAC and SPREP, supported by the Australian Government-funded Pacific Ocean Litter Project, along with local community partners. This initiative promises to foster a greater commitment to recycling and environmental sustainability, indicating a hopeful future for ecological responsibility in the region.
