The Ministry of Education has announced the opening of more secondary schools to benefit Year 9 students throughout the country. Minister Aseri Radrodro confirmed that Ratu Meli Memorial Secondary School is now welcoming students, marking a significant step in a larger initiative aimed at alleviating travel difficulties and keeping children engaged in education.

Last Thursday saw the launch of Naweni Secondary School, with Namuka Secondary School set to follow shortly. Radrodro also shared plans for additional schools in the areas of Nawaka, Yasawa, Ra, and Naitasiri, which will further expand educational opportunities across Fiji.

“These schools aim to bring education to our doorstep, helping our children stay in school until they complete their education,” Radrodro stated. He commended local communities for their perseverance against lengthy commutes that have previously hindered learning, highlighting how this resilience contributed to student achievements last year.

The Ministry reported an impressive enrollment figure of over 225,000 students in the previous academic year, and these new institutions are a crucial part of the effort to ensure that all students have equitable access to quality education despite Fiji’s geographical challenges. The opening of these schools is anticipated to bring a new era of educational accessibility, with the first sessions scheduled to commence tomorrow.
