Fiji National University (FNU) Vice-Chancellor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba recently announced a significant transition for the institution, stating that FNU will now operate under the Office of the Prime Minister, specifically under the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics. This shift, which was requested by the university itself, was not a decision imposed from above but rather a carefully considered step in response to FNU’s expanding role within the nation.

In a message directed to staff and students, Professor Nabobo-Baba clarified that formal discussions regarding this realignment commenced on August 10, 2024. The transition from the Ministry of Education underscores the university’s developing responsibilities and the essential national role it plays. The Vice-Chancellor expressed her appreciation for the support of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and the Ministry of Strategic Planning, recognizing their assistance in facilitating this significant change.

Moreover, she noted the contributions of the FNU Council, including its chair and members, who have provided continuous support during the transition process. This strategic move is aimed at better positioning the university to fulfill its growing responsibilities, ultimately enhancing its contributions to Fiji’s development.

Fiji National University’s transition marks a pivotal moment for the institution, signaling a strengthened commitment to addressing the educational needs of the nation and reinforcing its capabilities to support the country’s growth. This positive change is expected to allow FNU to expand its impact, further integrating its programs with national development goals.
