Fijians eager to take part in the upcoming Local Government Elections must re-register as voters, as announced by Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa during a recent media briefing in Suva. She clarified that while the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) maintains a national register for General Elections, voters must complete a specific re-registration process for the Local Government Polls.

Successfully completing the re-registration will allow voters to receive a new voter card that will display their designated polling venues for both Local Government and General Elections. Voters who opt not to re-register can continue using their current voter ID cards for the General Election.

For those considering running as independent candidates in the Local Government Elections, the entry requirements are relatively straightforward—candidates need just eight signatures and a payment of $200. Moreover, Mataiciwa mentioned that the elections will follow a first-past-the-post voting system, as opposed to the threshold requirement seen in General Elections.

An awareness campaign intended to educate voters about the electoral process will kick off next Friday, and voter registration will be available from April 13 until the issuance of the writ by the Electoral Commission. Recruitment for election officials will also take place between April 13 and May 16, with training scheduled from July 27 to August 16. Candidates will vie for 141 councilor positions across 40 wards, using 72 polling venues throughout the central, eastern, northern, and western divisions of Fiji.

The initiatives put forth by the electoral office underscore a commitment to facilitating a seamless electoral process, ensuring that every eligible voter is prepared to participate and make their voices heard in the upcoming elections. This proactive stance bodes well for the future of local governance in Fiji, encouraging active civic engagement and democratic participation.
