The recently launched micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) database is set to revolutionize support for MSMEs in Fiji. This new national, centralized, and secure platform is designed to capture crucial information about MSMEs across various sectors, enabling the first comprehensive view of the country’s MSME landscape.

With the database, Fiji will have access to detailed data regarding business size, location, employment levels, sector participation, and the critical challenges faced by these enterprises. Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel, who officiated the launch, pointed out the fragmentation of MSME data across multiple bodies in the past—ranging from registration agencies to tax authorities and financial institutions. This disconnect hindered effective planning and coordination.

The new database addresses this issue by consolidating MSME information while prioritizing confidentiality and data protection measures. According to Immanuel, the MSME Database will greatly enhance evidence-based policymaking and budgeting, allowing the government to design programs that better cater to the actual needs of businesses.

Starting January 5th next year, MSMEs registered on the database will be able to apply for five key grant programs through the MSME Portal at www.msmeportal.gov.fj. These programs include the Integrated Human Resource Development Programme, National Export Strategy, Trade Enhancement Programme, Young Entrepreneurship Scheme, and the Northern Development Programme.

The establishment of this database heralds a positive shift in supporting Fiji’s economic backbone—its MSMEs—giving them the tools and resources they need to thrive in a competitive market.
