The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, is set to meet with representatives from the mataqali Nabukebuke and officials from the Namosi Joint Venture (NJV) today. This meeting comes in light of concerns expressed by customary landowners regarding unresolved land matters and outstanding compensation payments.
Minister Vosarogo acknowledged the grievances raised by the mataqali Nabukebuke, particularly the claims of unpaid compensation amounting to $75,000 that have reportedly been withheld by NJV since last year. The minister emphasized the importance of finding a balance between the landowners’ genuine concerns and the need for investment in the region, expressing hope that both parties could arrive at a satisfactory resolution.
Petero Saunivalu, spokesman for mataqali Nabukebuke and director of Nabukebuke Holdings, further detailed that there are ongoing issues related to NJV allegedly occupying land without a valid license. He indicated that the trust representing the mataqali is seeking eviction from the Waisoi Base Camp, and urged the director of mines to enforce immediate actions regarding what they consider an unlawful occupation.
“The special prospecting licence issued to Namosi Joint Venture has expired, yet operations continue without our consent,” Mr. Saunivalu stated, calling for prompt action from the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources.
In a positive development, Netava Bakaniceva, country manager for NJV, confirmed during a previous meeting that the frozen compensation payment of $75,000 would be disbursed to the trustees today, potentially marking a significant step towards resolving some of the ongoing disputes.
This meeting represents a crucial juncture for both the customary landowners and the investment entities involved, highlighting the importance of dialogue in addressing grievances and ensuring fair treatment for all parties. It reflects a commitment to resolving issues that impact local communities and the operational integrity of investments in the area.
