The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has initiated a comprehensive series of audits and inspections targeting ships and shipping companies to ensure adherence to the Maritime (Safe Ship Management Systems) Regulations 2014. Acting Chief Executive Officer Iliesa Batisaresare announced the commencement of these audits in a Marine Notice issued this week.

These evaluations will span all eligible vessels and their respective companies over the course of approximately six months, or until every eligible entity has been inspected, whichever occurs first. MSAF has alerted all relevant operators to provide their Company Safe Ship Management System (SSMS) manuals and standard operating procedures by March 31, 2026.

In addition, shipping companies have been reminded of their responsibilities under Section 40 of the Maritime Transport Act 2013 and Regulation 18 of the Maritime (Safe Ship Management Systems) Regulations 2014, which delineate the statutory requirements for safe vessel operations and effective management systems.

Batisaresare emphasized the Authority’s objective to grant full SSMS certifications to compliant vessels and companies following the conclusion of the audit process. He expressed gratitude for the cooperation of industry stakeholders, underscoring it as a vital element for success.

The audit initiative forms part of MSAF’s broader commitment to enhance maritime safety standards and ensure regulatory compliance throughout Fiji’s shipping sector. This proactive approach promises to foster safer seas and contribute positively to the operational integrity of the maritime industry in Fiji.
