The Eastern Division has initiated national consultations for Fiji’s National Rural Development Policy (NRDP), aimed at enhancing development in rural and outer island areas. Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, emphasized that the consultations are critical for improving the planning and execution of rural development programs across the nation.

Highlighting the rich cultural and natural resources of communities in areas such as Rotuma, Lau, Lomaiviti, and Kadavu, Ditoka acknowledged the persistent challenges these regions face, including high transportation costs, limited market access, climate vulnerability, and increasing pressures on livelihoods. He stressed that addressing these issues requires collaborative efforts and strong partnerships, rather than isolated actions.

This workshop is part of a broader series of consultations intended to inform the NRDP, a key aspect of the Change Management Programme and a component of the Fiji National Development Plan 2025–2029. The NRDP development follows a review of the Integrated Rural Development Framework 2009, which identified necessary improvements in coordination, risk management, and the need for a more community-centric approach.

Ditoka reiterated the importance of a co-creation process in developing the NRDP, placing community feedback and experiences at the forefront of decision-making. He encouraged participants to share their insights and ideas candidly, ensuring an inclusive approach that leaves no community behind, regardless of geographical barriers.

These consultations represent a hopeful step toward empowering rural communities and fostering resilience, making it clear that collaborative engagement will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of rural development in Fiji.
