The High Court has postponed its decision regarding a request from three government officials who are questioning the admissibility of evidence presented by the prosecution, which they argue is based on hearsay. Justice Usaia Ratuvili was originally set to deliver the verdict at 10 a.m. but a notice posted outside the courthouse indicated that the ruling will now be issued on Monday.

This case involves former health minister Dr. Neil Sharma, former prime minister Voreqe Bainimarama, and former attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. They face serious charges, including abuse of office, obstructing justice, and breach of trust related to alleged transactions from 2011.

Wylie Clarke, the president of the Fiji Law Society and representative for Dr. Sharma, is challenging the prosecution’s evidence, focusing on the tender evaluation report and its associated minutes on the grounds of hearsay. The outcome of this ruling could potentially have significant implications for the defendants, as well as for the broader context of legal proceedings involving high-profile figures in the government.

As the legal environment continues to evolve, the focus remains on the integrity of evidence and the judicial process in Fiji. The coming days will be crucial in determining the path forward for those involved in this case.
