Starting from New Year’s Day, Fijian motorists and households will experience a slight increase in fuel prices, as announced by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC). The price of motor spirit will rise by 4 cents, bringing it to $2.61 per litre, while diesel will see a larger increase of 8 cents, now costing $2.35 per litre. Users of kerosene will face the most significant rise, with prices climbing to $1.86, reflecting a 5.08 percent increase.

These adjustments are primarily attributed to unfavorable shifts in international refined fuel prices and freight rates encountered in November 2025, along with the ongoing weakness of the US dollar.

On a positive note for consumers, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices are set to decrease. The price for a 4.5kg cylinder will drop to $13.33, while the 12kg cylinder will see a reduction of 78 cents, bringing it to $35.55. This decline results from a 3.16 percent decrease in the Butane Contract Price, despite facing higher international freight costs.

In light of these changes, the FCCC has announced that its enforcement teams will conduct inspections nationwide to ensure retailers adhere to these maximum price ceilings. Consumers have also been encouraged to report any instances of overcharging or hoarding to the appropriate authorities.

While the fuel price increases may impose a financial strain, the reduction in LPG costs brings some much-needed relief to households, highlighting the complexities and fluctuations of the global fuel market.
