Fuel prices in Fiji are set to decrease starting tomorrow, while Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices will see a significant increase, according to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC). The new regulated prices for March 2026 indicate a substantial drop in the costs for various fuels including motor spirit, premix, kerosene, and diesel, which will be implemented nationwide.

Residents of Viti Levu will benefit from a reduction in motor spirit prices, which will fall to $2.44 per litre, reflecting an 11 cent decrease. Diesel prices will drop to $2.14 per litre, while kerosene will be priced at $1.69 per litre. Similar price reductions will take effect in Vanua Levu, Ovalau, the outer islands, and Rotuma, with decreases ranging from 3 to 12 cents depending on the specific location.

In contrast, LPG prices are set to increase. For consumers on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, the price of a 4.5kg cylinder will rise by 48 cents to $14.04, and the cost of a 12kg cylinder will increase by $1.28 to reach $37.45. Additionally, prices for autogas will also see an upward adjustment, impacting various regions including the outer islands and Rotuma.

The FCCC explained that the pricing adjustments are linked to fuel imports from January, operating under a one-month lag system. The reduction in fuel prices is largely due to a decline in international refined fuel prices and a weakening US dollar, although these drops are occurring alongside rising freight costs. Conversely, the increase in LPG prices is attributed to a notable 7.22% rise in the international Butane Contract Price determined by Saudi Aramco, combined with heightened global demand and tighter supply conditions documented in January.

To ensure that these changes are adhered to, the FCCC has announced that its enforcement teams will monitor service stations and LPG retail outlets closely. Retailers must comply with the authorized maximum pricing to safeguard consumers from potential exploitation during these fluctuations in the market.

This latest adjustment in fuel costs, alongside the rise in LPG prices, underscores the fluidity of the global energy market and its direct impact on local economies and consumers. The situation highlights the importance of monitoring these dynamics to maintain consumer protection and economic stability in Fiji.
