Fiji is striving to enhance its agriculture sector’s presence in international markets, but progress is hindered by challenges related to capability and access to those markets, as highlighted by the Fiji Australia Business Council. Council President Himen Chandra pointed out that agriculture is not just a promising area for Fiji’s economic growth but is also essential for long-term sustainability. However, local businesses must first address various structural and operational hurdles to compete effectively on a global scale.

Chandra emphasized the significant opportunity presented by Fiji’s natural resources and agricultural production potential. He noted that, while sectors like Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) are important, agriculture offers greater long-term benefits. For this to materialize, enhancing business readiness and bolstering export pathways is imperative.

“One of the biggest issues is ensuring we have the right capability, the right resources, and the right business attitude within the sector,” Chandra stated. He indicated that many agricultural businesses in Fiji struggle to meet international standards, maintain consistent supply chains, and manage export logistics — all critical factors for entering competitive markets such as Australia.

To overcome these challenges, Chandra advocates for forming joint venture partnerships with Australian and regional investors. These collaborations could provide Fijian producers with essential technical knowledge, improved infrastructure, and access to established distribution channels. “There is strong potential in the industry, but businesses must start looking at joint venture partners both in and out of Australia to help gain market access for Fijian products,” he added.

The issue of export readiness is a longstanding concern among industry stakeholders, with rising demand for Pacific-grown products in overseas markets. Despite this, inconsistent production capacity and limited investment continue to stifle growth. The Fiji Australia Business Council asserts that fostering targeted collaboration among governments, private sector stakeholders, and international partners is crucial to unlocking the full potential of the agriculture sector and enhancing Fiji’s export competitiveness.

Overall, as fresh initiatives and partnerships develop, there is optimism that Fiji’s agriculture industry will overcome its current challenges, leading to successful expansion in international markets.
