Former Chief Executive of the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, along with the current Chief Financial Officer, Vimlesh Sagar, is set to enter their pleas next month in connection with corruption charges brought against them by the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC). The pair appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court today, where proceedings were temporarily halted as the prosecution requested additional time to provide more details about the case.

FICAC representatives urged the defendants to plead; however, defense attorneys insisted that their clients would respond once they received the necessary particulars. Sayed-Khaiyum faces two charges: one count of abuse of office and another for general dishonesty leading to a financial loss. Meanwhile, Sagar is charged with a single count of general dishonesty linked to the same issue.

These allegations arise from a procurement process concerning a vehicle valued at $207,470. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of FICAC to address corruption and ensure transparency within government and public enterprises. The next court session has been scheduled for March 5, where both men are expected to formally enter their pleas. This case underscores the commitment to accountability and the importance of upholding ethical standards in public service.
