The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has taken decisive enforcement measures following an oil discharge incident that occurred in a public drain on Jai Ambamma Road in Vatuwaqa. Environmental inspectors identified Ashok Transport Pte Limited as the source of the spill, which has raised significant environmental concerns.
In response, the Ministry has issued a Prohibition Notice along with Remedial Orders, guided by the Environment Management Act 2005. As part of these actions, Ashok Transport has been fined $1,500 under the Environment Management (Waste Disposal and Recycling) Regulations 2007. The company is now required to clean up all oil contamination in the affected drain and its facility, with a strict deadline of 14 days to complete the remediation activities.
Moreover, the Prohibition Notice mandates an immediate cessation of any further discharge of oil, waste oil, or lubricants from the site. Dr. Sivendra Michael, Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, articulated the gravity of environmental regulation compliance. He warned that “non-compliance with waste permit conditions is a serious offense” and highlighted that the Ministry will pursue legal action in cases of negligence, reinforcing that environmental protection is not optional. Businesses must be accountable for the environmental impacts of their operations.
To ensure compliance with the issued orders, the Ministry will maintain close monitoring of the site. Additionally, businesses operating near waterways are being reminded of their obligations to responsibly manage the handling, storage, and containment of oil and other hazardous substances.
This incident and the subsequent enforcement actions underline the Ministry’s steadfast commitment to environmental protection. The ongoing collaboration with relevant authorities for regular inspections and compliance monitoring showcases a proactive approach to safeguarding Fiji’s waterways and marine environment. Such measures not only protect the ecosystem but also foster accountability among businesses, contributing to a healthier environment for future generations.
