Fiji’s Police Minister, Iowane Naivalurua, has described the escalating drug issue in the country as a national emergency. At the National Talanoa Session in Lami, focused on combatting illicit drugs in Fiji, Naivalurua revealed alarming statistics showing that almost 2,400 drug-related cases were reported in the past year alone, pointing to a significant rise in drug-related incidents.
Naivalurua expressed concern over the trend, indicating that most offenders fall within the 18 to 35 age range, a troubling sign for the nation’s youth. He warned of the serious threat posed by international drug trafficking organizations and highlighted the concerning link between methamphetamine use and the proliferation of HIV.
“This issue transcends law enforcement; it is fundamentally a public health crisis,” Naivalurua affirmed. He noted that while comparisons are often made between Fiji and countries with well-known drug issues such as Mexico and Colombia, Fiji is resolute in its mission to combat this rising menace.
As discussions about the challenges posed by drugs continue this week, local community dialogues are actively seeking solutions to address the concerning trend. The government’s proactive approach reflects its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its citizens and ensuring the safety of communities across Fiji. This initiative symbolizes a hopeful step towards fostering a healthier and safer environment for all.
