Fiji’s Police Minister, Iowane Naivalurua, has declared the country’s increasing drug problem a national emergency. During the National Talanoa Session in Lami that focused on addressing illicit drugs in Fiji, Naivalurua disclosed alarming statistics, noting that nearly 2,400 drug-related cases were reported in just the past year, specifically in 2025.

The minister highlighted that the majority of offenders are young adults, predominantly aged between 18 and 35, signaling a concerning trend among the youth. He emphasized the serious risk Fiji faces from international drug trafficking groups, while also bringing attention to the troubling association between methamphetamine use and the transmission of HIV.

“This issue transcends law enforcement; it is fundamentally a public health crisis,” Naivalurua stated. He underscored that despite comparisons to countries known for their significant drug problems, such as Mexico and Colombia, Fiji is determined to counteract this rising threat.

The dialogue on drug-related challenges continues to unfold this week, as community conversations strive to address and find solutions to the escalating issue. The government’s proactive stance illustrates a commitment to tackle this urgent matter, hoping to protect the well-being of Fiji’s citizens and maintain the safety of its communities.
