The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has reaffirmed its dedication to upholding human rights principles within its operations following a constructive meeting with the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC). This important dialogue aimed to address pending complaints and enhance cooperation between the two entities.
The meeting, which took place yesterday, included significant figures such as Acting Commissioner of Corrections Auta Moceisuva and FHRADC Commissioner Alefina Vuki, alongside Senior Complaints Officer Tiko Nobis. During the discussions, Commissioner Moceisuva acknowledged that leadership changes and modifications to internal procedures had previously impacted the collaboration between the FCS and FHRADC. He expressed a strong resolve to cultivate a closer partnership moving forward.
“We understand that we have faced delays in addressing your queries, often due to changes in our processes. However, I want to assure you that we are continuously guided by human rights principles,” he stated.
Additionally, Commissioner Moceisuva indicated that the FCS is working in conjunction with the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner to enhance their collaborative efforts. A joint initiative was proposed to both the FCS and FHRADC, aimed at identifying areas of support and focusing particularly on implementing essential operational standards.
In his remarks, Moceisuva addressed the fundamental operations of prisons and remand centers, highlighting the contrast between official policy and the real challenges encountered on a daily basis. He pointed out the varying behaviors of inmates while incarcerated and how these behaviors can significantly influence the management and operations of correctional facilities.
This collaboration between the FCS and FHRADC represents a hopeful step toward enhancing human rights standards within Fiji’s correctional institutions.
