Early this morning, authorities conducted a significant drug bust off the coast of Vatia, Tavua, seizing over 100 sacks of suspected cocaine and apprehending six individuals, four of whom are believed to be from Ecuador. Rajeshwar Anand Kapoor, the caretaker of the Vatia wharf, disclosed that he had repeatedly alerted local police to unusual yacht activity, citing instances of large vessels anchoring near the wharf while their occupants engaged in questionable behaviors like washing boats or swimming. Kapoor’s vigilance is noteworthy; he had reported similar suspicious activities involving foreign vessels in the area as far back as last year.
His concerns were heightened in the early hours of the operation when police approached his home, informing him that a major raid was taking place. Following the successful seizure of narcotics, a substantial police presence was established at the Ba Police Station, where the arrested individuals and the confiscated drugs are currently held.
Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that the drug bust was a coordinated effort led by the Criminal Investigations Department, the Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department, and the Western Division Taskforce. He emphasized the significance of this collaboration, illustrating the effective partnership between local and international law enforcement in combating drug trafficking.
