A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for several regions in Fiji, prompting authorities to advise residents to take immediate safety precautions. The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi released this alert at 2 PM, focusing on the interior and southern parts of Viti Levu, stretching from Sigatoka along the Coral Coast to Navua, as well as southern areas of Vanua Levu, including Bua and Cakaudrove.

Forecasters have indicated that daytime heating is leading to increased thunderstorm activity across the inland areas of Fiji’s two main islands. As the situation develops, these thunderstorms are anticipated to intensify and move southward, affecting southern districts.

The severe thunderstorms are likely to bring heavy rainfall, which could potentially result in flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone regions within the next few hours. Additionally, the public can expect frequent and dangerous lightning strikes associated with these storms.

Authorities are urging the public to steer clear of flooded creeks and drains and to avoid walking, cycling, or driving through floodwaters. Residents are also advised to unplug electrical appliances and computers if they hear thunder or see lightning. Those who find themselves outdoors during lightning activity should minimize their body height and promptly seek safe shelter, ideally indoors.

It is crucial for individuals to refrain from taking shelter under trees and to remain indoors, keeping away from windows while ensuring children are also kept inside. Thunderstorm activity accompanied by heavy rainfall and lightning is anticipated to persist into late afternoon or evening. However, due to the unpredictable nature of thunderstorms, not all areas may experience the same level of impact.

With vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines, the community can navigate through this weather challenge, promoting a sense of mutual care and preparedness among residents.
