A heavy rain warning has been issued for the entire Fiji Group as deteriorating weather conditions affect the islands. The Fiji Meteorological Service reports that a trough of low pressure is causing cloudy skies, showers, and significant rainfall, with this pattern expected to continue for the coming days.
Today’s forecast predicts occasional rain, which may be heavy at times, coupled with the possibility of thunderstorms. Residents should prepare for ongoing rain from tomorrow, again likely heavy, along with further thunderstorms.
Rainfall totals over the past 24 hours have been considerable, with several regions recording significant amounts. Notably, Wairikicake received 91.0 mm, Dreketilailai saw 82.5 mm, and Nanoko had 81.5 mm. Other heavily impacted areas include Udu Point with 79.5 mm, Keiyasi at 70.0 mm, and urban locations like Rarawai and Dobuilevu, which recorded 55.0 mm and 52.5 mm respectively.
Warnings have been issued regarding potential flash flooding, particularly in low-lying regions, informal settlements, and business areas near Irish crossings. Such flooding may disrupt traffic, with urban areas particularly prone to surface flooding due to drainage issues.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution as wet roads and reduced visibility during heavy rains present increased risks of accidents. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant, stay informed about weather updates, and take necessary actions to ensure their safety as Fiji copes with these weather challenges.
This situation highlights the crucial need for preparedness against extreme weather, fostering a spirit of community solidarity as residents confront the difficulties brought on by the ongoing rainfall.
