Adi Narayan, the chairman of the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF), has expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the recent advertisement for his position by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which occurred despite his current term not concluding until July 31. Narayan stated he was taken aback by the decision, as he had received prior assurances from the Minister that the advertisement would be postponed until closer to the end of his tenure.

The premature advertisement has caused confusion among stakeholders and the public, leading many to speculate about Narayan’s intention to resign. He reassured everyone of his commitment to continue in his role and announced plans for a stakeholders’ meeting, which will be open to the press for inquiries and clarifications.

In a separate yet concerning matter, Narayan addressed the situation involving a former board member who faced suspension last year over allegations of misusing over $1,200 in commission funds. Despite these allegations, the former board member has reportedly been appointed to a role within the Ministry of Sports. Narayan noted that he had informed the Minister about this matter the previous year, yet no actions have been taken. He mentioned that the board possesses evidence regarding the alleged misappropriation and is contemplating further actions, possibly including legal recourse.

Efforts to reach Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru for comment on these pressing issues were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered. The BCF board plans to convene soon to deliberate on the issues at hand and determine the best course of action.

This scenario sheds light on ongoing governance challenges within the Boxing Commission and raises important questions about accountability in the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Further developments are anticipated following the forthcoming stakeholders’ meeting.

In a positive turn for boxing fans, the first promotion of the year is set to take place later this month at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, promising an exciting event for the local sports community.
