Fiji Blues head coach Viliame Satala is eager to enhance the development of his team by entering them into more local tournaments following their successful stint at the recent Rooster Chicken Grassroots Sevens Tournament. The coach believes that increased participation in local sevens competitions will provide invaluable experience for the younger players.
Reflecting on the recent tournament, Satala noted that the team benefitted significantly from the competition, helping them refine critical elements of their game. “The boys really stepped up after that scare from Dominion. Against Army, they began to find their cohesion and confidence,” he remarked.
Satala emphasized the focus on improving specific skills, including winning back kick-offs, enhancing communication, and strengthening defensive structures. The players showed notable progress in these areas, which is promising for the future of the team. Apimeliki Nasalo earned the title of player of the tournament, showcasing his significant impact through dominant play and breakdown disruptions.
In addition to Nasalo, several new players caught the coach’s eye, including Isaia Rugu and Esala in the backline, Douglas Daveta, and playmaker Etuate. Satala expressed his satisfaction with their performances, indicating a bright future for these emerging talents.
Despite the tournament victory, he remains focused on ongoing development, particularly in fostering effective communication among players. “In sevens, communication binds the team defensively and in attack, especially towards the end of the game,” he noted, acknowledging the naturally reserved nature of some players. However, he also recognized progress, saying, “I’m just glad we are gradually hearing their voices more; this tournament has really helped.”
With plans for more local tournaments ahead, Satala is confident that these development players will soon be ready to make their mark on the international stage, marking a promising chapter in Fiji rugby’s future.
