Usaia Sotutu, one of Fiji’s most celebrated athletics figures, was honored in a heartfelt ceremony that recognized his significant contributions to the sport and his enduring influence both nationally and regionally. The event took place at the FMF Gymnasium Training Room in Laucala Bay, organized by Athletics Fiji in collaboration with the Fiji Sports Council.
Attendees included former teammates, friends, officials, and members of the athletics community, all gathered to celebrate Sotutu’s remarkable achievements over his decades-long career. Notably, Sotutu represented Fiji at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games and left an indelible mark at the Pacific Games, securing an impressive four gold medals at the 1971 Pacific Games in Tahiti.
His prowess in middle- and long-distance running established him as one of the leading track athletes in Fiji’s history. In acknowledgment of his outstanding career, Sotutu was inducted into the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
During the ceremony, Sotutu expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the importance of reconnecting with friends and former teammates from his competitive days.
