The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has confirmed its willingness to engage with the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission, part of a larger initiative aimed at encouraging internal reconciliation and fostering national healing. This was conveyed by RFMF Commander Brigadier-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, who announced that preliminary discussions are underway, demonstrating a proactive stance towards deepening their involvement in the reconciliation process.
Brigadier-General Kalouniwai highlighted the importance of organizing the military’s role in these reconciliation efforts. He recognized Fiji’s historical difficulties and stressed the necessity of reconciliation in paving the way for the country’s development, despite some public skepticism surrounding the initiative.
He stated, “There are voices that want to be heard, and we will allow that to happen. The freedom of expression is there for everyone. It’s just a matter of being patient with the process,” underlining the RFMF’s openness to listen to the concerns of the populace as part of the national healing journey.
Reaffirming his dedication, Brigadier-General Kalouniwai expressed confidence in the outcome, saying, “We’ll reach that end, we’ll reach the end of the tunnel.” He also noted that last year, the RFMF prioritized focusing on internal reconciliation efforts before broadening its scope to national reconciliation, emphasizing the vital need to build trust between the military and the citizens.
