Fiji is making remarkable progress in its endeavor to build a state-of-the-art national hospital, as articulated by Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu. The initiative has gained momentum following the identification of the Valelevu Grounds as a potential site for the new facility, which is currently undergoing technical and feasibility assessments to guarantee its appropriateness for the project.
Dr. Lalabalavu highlighted that this initiative transcends merely erecting a new structure; it also focuses on upgrading existing healthcare facilities. This includes essential improvements at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) while longer-term plans for the national hospital are brought to fruition.
“This was endorsed, so right now it is about ensuring that we work in close collaboration with our donor partners to see the next phase of the work,” he said. The development is part of the Pacific Healthy Islands Transformation Project, which is receiving significant financial support from prominent organizations such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and the OPEC Fund.
Additionally, the Australian Government is playing a crucial role in this transformation by providing substantial grant funding that assists in implementing urgent upgrades at CWM Hospital. This support is vital for maintaining service delivery as Fiji prepares to advance its healthcare system for the future.
Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized that this initiative represents a proactive transition from short-term solutions to sustainable, long-term investments in health infrastructure. The overarching goal is to create a robust healthcare system focused on resiliency and enhancing the wellbeing of future generations. This progressive vision reiterates Fiji’s dedication to improving its healthcare capabilities and delivering high-quality health services to its citizens.
