The Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC) has revised the charges against Suva lawyer Tanya Waqanika. Waqanika appeared this morning at the Suva Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Yogesh Prasad.

Waqanika faces accusations for publicly expressing opposition to the political party SODELPA, in violation of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act 2013. Specifically, she is charged under Section 14(7) in conjunction with Section 14(1)(d) of the Act.

It is alleged that, while serving as a board member for both Investment Fiji and Telecom Fiji Limited, Waqanika made opposing comments regarding SODELPA in a Facebook post dated April 19, 2024.

FICAC lawyer Rusiate Doidoi has also presented additional disclosures related to the case. Waqanika is scheduled to enter her plea during her next court appearance, set for the 24th of next month.

This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding political expression and the responsibilities of public officers in Fiji, reflecting the complex intersection of law and politics in the region.
