Jony Ive invested significant effort into the design of an Apple Car interior before the project was ultimately scrapped. While the specific designs may remain unseen, the new electric Ferrari, the Luce, offers insights that hint at the aesthetic features that could have been part of the Apple vehicle.
The Luce’s cockpit was meticulously crafted by Ive’s consultancy, Lovefrom, and it showcases a design language reminiscent of Ive’s work with Apple. Engadget’s Tim Stevens highlighted this connection, noting the familiar elements that have characterized Apple’s design ethos since the introduction of the iPhone 4.
The aesthetic of the Luce is marked by a harmonious blend of “squircle” and circular shapes, with an emphasis on precision and symmetry. The cockpit boasts over 40 pieces of Corning Gorilla Glass, thoughtfully placed throughout the interior—from the shifter surround to the subtly convex lenses within the gauge cluster. In areas not adorned with glass, there’s an elegant use of aluminum, available in a choice of three anodized finishes: gray, dark gray, and rose gold.
One particularly innovative detail is the key design. It features a yellow panel with an E Ink display. When the key is inserted into the magnetized receiver in the center console, the yellow illuminates, creating an effect that visually transfers light to the glass shifter, symbolizing a unique interplay of technology and life.
During a recent introduction, Ive made headlines with a candid remark: “Part of my grumpy belligerence now is I’m done working with assholes,” which resonated with the audience humorously.
For those intrigued by this blend of design and innovation, Engadget has provided a plethora of images showcasing the Ferrari Luce’s interior. Although Ferrari’s teaser video doesn’t highlight the interior, it builds anticipation for what promises to be an extraordinary vehicle.
