Ethan Hawke has earned acclaim for his performance in “Blue Moon,” a film shot in Ireland, leading to a prestigious nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Academy Awards. The film, which also received recognition for Best Original Screenplay by Robert Kaplow, was praised by Ardmore Studios in Bray where much of the filming took place.
“Blue Moon,” directed by Richard Linklater, was filmed from April to August 2024 and captures the essence of Broadway lyricist Lorenz ‘Larry’ Hart during a pivotal moment in his life. Set in March 1943, the narrative centers around the opening night of the iconic musical “Oklahoma!”, showcasing the collaboration between Hart and his former partner, Richard Rodgers. The cast features notable talents, including Andrew Scott as Rodgers and Margaret Qualley as Elizabeth Weiland, a Yale student who captures Hart’s affection.
Ardmore Studios expressed their pride in hosting such a remarkable production, highlighting how these nominations reflect not only the skill of those involved but also how Ireland serves as a world-class destination for film and television. Elaine Geraghty, Managing Director of Ardmore Studios and Troy Studios, emphasized the significance of this recognition for everyone associated with “Blue Moon.”
Hawke, who held fond memories of filming in Co. Wicklow, has shared his excitement about potentially working in Ireland again. He fondly recounted how the vibrant acting community made his time there especially memorable. During his stay, he even made a casual visit to Caffe Vergnano in Bray, where staff enjoyed having such a “nice guy” in their café.
The film not only focuses on Hart’s artistic journey but also delves into the bittersweet dynamics of his relationship with Rodgers and the changing landscape of Broadway. Hawke reflected on Hart’s struggles, stating how despite his significant contributions to music, the end of his partnership and the evolution of the musical genre left him feeling heartbroken. He poignantly noted that “great art does survive,” a sentiment that underscores the show’s enduring legacy despite the shifting tides of artistic expression.
As “Blue Moon” garners international recognition with its Academy Award nominations, it stands as a testament to the collaboration between talented artists and the captivating backdrop of Ireland, promising to leave a lasting impact on both audiences and the film industry alike.
