Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh has expressed a positive outlook on the ongoing discussions between Energy Fiji Ltd and around 500 of its employees represented by the Construction, Energy and Timber Workers Union (CETWUF). Previously, these employees issued a strike notice in December, citing concerns about salary matters projected for 2024 and 2025.

The workers have signaled a potential walkout scheduled for February 15 if their grievances are not addressed. However, a voluntary mediation session was held on January 19, which involved representatives from both parties and the Ministry of Employment and Industrial Relations. Singh described the initial meeting as productive, indicating that it marks the commencement of a constructive dialogue.

“The first session of mediation went very well,” Singh remarked. “The next one is scheduled for next Monday, and we are confident we will reach a settlement within the coming week.”

This ongoing dialogue is promising for both Energy Fiji management and employees, as it seeks to tackle salary issues that significantly affect the workers’ livelihoods. The government’s role in facilitating this mediation underscores its commitment to nurturing positive labor relations and fostering cooperation between employers and employees. The proactive approach taken by all involved parties highlights a shared desire to resolve conflicts amicably, ultimately leading to a more stable work environment.
