Swire Shipping Fijian Drua co-captain Temo Mayanavanua recognized that discipline significantly impacted their 31-47 defeat against the Gallagher Chiefs during a Super Rugby Pacific pre-season trial match held at Blake Park in Mount Manganui, New Zealand. Despite the setback, Mayanavanua highlighted the positive aspects that emerged from the encounter.

“Discipline is something that let us down,” he remarked, indicating that reducing errors would have potentially allowed for a closer contest against the Chiefs. He noted that this match featured many newcomers, and the team is focused on fostering partnerships and integrating these new players into the roster.

Mayanavanua expressed optimism about several encouraging signs, particularly in their counter-attacks and ball movement. He stated, “We looked after the counter-attack really well, and the boys managed to gain line on the edges.” Nonetheless, he admitted that their defense needs improvement, especially after noticing the Chiefs’ effectiveness in aerial play.

Looking to the future, the Drua will play against the Skipper Select XV side at Churchill Park in Lautoka next Friday at 4pm, as they continue to refine their game in preparation for the regular season.

Adding to the atmosphere of local support, Mere Tora attended the match with her two daughters, who reside in Tauranga. Tora, who recently moved from Fiji, relished the opportunity to root for the Drua. She reflected on the historical connections between the Chiefs and Fijian rugby, saying, “At one stage for the Chiefs, Fiji was their home ground, so the connection was already there, and the locals are looking forward to this game.”

The Fijian Drua’s determination and the enthusiasm of the community for their presence in New Zealand embody a hopeful spirit surrounding this emerging rugby franchise, as they aim to gain momentum heading into the new season.
