Destanee Aiava, the Australian tennis player, has announced that 2026 will mark her final year competing on the WTA Tour. In a candid and intense Instagram post, Aiava expressed her struggles within the sport, describing tennis as “racist, misogynistic, homophobic and hostile to anyone who doesn’t fit the mould.” Her frank remarks drew comparisons to a toxic relationship, highlighting the challenges and criticisms she has faced throughout her career.

Aiava did not hold back, directing her frustrations toward members of the tennis community and online trolls who have critiqued her appearance, career, and personal life. “I want to say a ginormous f— you to everyone in the tennis community who’s ever made me feel less than,” she stated, expressing her disappointment towards those who perpetuate negativity in the sport.

At 25, Aiava acknowledges her achievements, noting her pride in representing the Pacific Island community on a global stage, despite her ranking peaking at No. 147. Her notable performances include a victory over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in 2019 and challenging Danielle Collins at the Australian Open last year, where she garnered attention from a supportive crowd.

Despite her successes, Aiava reflects on the personal toll tennis has taken on her life, impacting her relationship with her body, health, family, and self-esteem. She recalls feeling unwelcome during her time with the Australian United Cup team in 2025, describing the atmosphere as “weird and hostile,” which further deepened her grievances with the sport.

A fashion enthusiast, she has previously made headlines for her striking outfits, even replicating the dresses of past champions during her time at the Australian Open. However, after her recent defeat in the opening round of this year’s qualifying event, she voiced her disappointment on social media, questioning the value of her efforts in the sport.

Online abuse remains a significant issue for athletes, with a report revealing that a notable percentage of abusive comments stemmed from dissatisfied gamblers. Aiava’s experiences underscore the pressing need for reform within the tennis community, highlighting the adverse effects of criticism and hostility that many athletes face. As she prepares for her final season, Aiava’s story resonates as a reminder of the resilience athletes must possess in the face of adversity.
