As the 2025 NFL regular season draws to a close, the Dallas Cowboys are on the brink of another disappointing finish, failing to secure a playoff spot alongside the 14 other teams that will compete in the postseason. The Cowboys’ struggles this season have largely been attributed to a lackluster defense that has undermined a powerful, albeit inconsistent, offense. As a result, the organization is beginning to shift its focus toward the upcoming offseason and rebuilding for a stronger campaign in 2026.

With the Cowboys facing crucial coaching decisions, changes in the defensive and special teams coaching staff are anticipated. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who hired special teams coordinator Nick Sorensen, had defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus appointed by the front office. Both may find themselves on the chopping block following the conclusion of the team’s Week 18 game against the New York Giants.

As the Cowboys ponder their coaching future, they will also turn their attention to free agency and the highly anticipated 2026 NFL Draft. The team’s decisions regarding contract renewals for in-house free agents, potential extensions for promising younger players, and the acquisition of new talent through trades or free agency will be shaped by their draft assets.

In the previous offseason, the Cowboys made several strategic trades, adding players like wide receiver George Pickens, linebacker Kenneth Murray, cornerback Kaiir Elam, and quarterback Joe Milton to the roster. They also dealt star linebacker Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark. Additionally, mid-season trades for linebacker Logan Wilson and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams reinforced the team’s adaptability in refining its lineup through the seasons.

Heading into the 2026 draft, the Cowboys currently hold a promising assortment of picks. They have two first-round selections, with the first at No. 14 and a second at No. 21, acquired through the trade with the Packers. While they lack Day 2 picks, they have a fourth-round pick, along with three fifth-round picks (two compensatory), and one seventh-round pick. The compensatory picks are expected to come from losses in the previous free agency, giving the Cowboys additional leverage in the upcoming draft.

With a proactive approach to the offseason, the Cowboys’ front office has a unique opportunity to reshape the team. By effectively leveraging their draft stock and resources, along with strategic coaching decisions, they can lay the groundwork for a more successful season ahead. Fans remain hopeful that these efforts will lead to a more competitive roster and restored glory for the storied franchise.
