Ciara Myst poured her heart and soul into her performance on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 18, but ultimately became the latest contestant to be eliminated from the competition. Despite this setback, she expressed immense pride in her artistic portrayal and the important message it carried.
Speaking in an exit interview with Blavity’s Shadow and Act, Myst detail that her performance served as a meditation on the struggles of mental health, exploring feelings of confusion and isolation while portraying a journey of self-love and transformation. “The theme of metamorphosis has been a part of my art for years,” she explained, noting a project she created in 2017 called Metamorphosis, which was showcased at the mayor’s office in Atlanta in 2019. The piece represented her personal challenges with depression and her quest for reinvention, likening her experience to a caterpillar’s transformation into a butterfly.
Myst emphasized that the significance of her performance extended beyond mere entertainment; it resonated with many who also grapple with mental health issues. The recent passing of her drag sister, Tristyn St. Clair, in 2024 further validated the need for her story to be shared. She articulated a desire to shine a light on the struggles many face and the stigma surrounding mental health, stating, “We lose too many people too young because we don’t talk about it, or they feel alone.” The overwhelming support she received from fans online affirmed the impact of her message, making her feel seen and connected to others facing similar battles.
Reflecting on her time in the competition, Myst acknowledged the complex emotions that come with lip-syncing for survival. “There’s a part of that information that allows you to prepare and focus,” she noted, crediting her time to acclimate to the possibility of elimination with giving her a sense of confidence and inner peace. Regardless of the outcome, Myst was determined to leave a lasting impression and showcase her talent.
Looking ahead, Myst is excited about engaging with fans after her Drag Race journey. She plans to tour various cities, attend horror movie premieres, and strengthen her online presence through platforms like YouTube and social media. “I’m looking forward to being in everybody’s hometowns and connecting with you all there,” she shared, promising to share more about her performance and makeup artistry.
RuPaul’s Drag Race continues to air Fridays at 8 p.m. on MTV, showcasing not only fabulous performances but also important conversations surrounding mental health. Those in need of support are encouraged to reach out to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
