The Kansas City Chiefs have announced the signing of quarterback Shane Buechele from the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad to bolster their active roster. This move comes in light of a significant injury setback for the Chiefs, as quarterback Gardner Minshew suffered a torn ACL during a recent game. With Patrick Mahomes also sidelined, Kansas City was forced to turn to Chris Oladokun, who had previously been the team’s third-string QB.

Shane Buechele, 27, has a history with the Chiefs, having originally joined the team as an undrafted free agent following the 2021 NFL Draft. He showcased his skills at Southern Methodist University (SMU) after starting his collegiate career at Texas, where he served as a starter for two years. Over five seasons, Buechele achieved a 63.1 completion percentage, amassing 11,660 passing yards, 87 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions, along with 478 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.

After his initial time with the Chiefs, Buechele moved to the Bills organization, where he was placed on injured reserve in August 2024 and later re-signed to their practice squad. The latest development marks a new chapter in his career as he returns to the Chiefs amid their ongoing quarterback challenges. Though he has yet to debut in an NFL game, Buechele’s return could provide crucial depth to Kansas City’s quarterback position as they navigate the season’s unpredictable landscape.
