Casemiro is set to depart Manchester United when his contract concludes at the end of the current season. The 33-year-old Brazilian midfielder does hold a one-year extension option in his contract, but the club has decided against activating it.
Reports indicate that this extension could have been triggered if he started a specific number of games, believed to be around 35, during the 2025-26 season. However, with Manchester United’s elimination from both domestic cup competitions early on, Casemiro would need to play in all of their remaining 16 Premier League matches for that clause to come into play.
Since joining Manchester United from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022, a transfer valued at around £60 million (approximately $80.9 million), Casemiro has been a key figure for the team. His salary has amounted to £15 million per year for the seasons when the club hasn’t qualified for the Champions League, and £18 million for the season they did.
Following the announcement of his exit, Casemiro expressed his deep connection to the club, stating, “I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life. From the first day that I walked out at this beautiful stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford.” He emphasized that he plans to create many more memories throughout the remaining months of the season.
This season, he has made 21 appearances, contributing to a total of 146 matches for United. He has maintained a significant presence in the team’s line-up under the management of Ruben Amorim, Darren Fletcher, and Michael Carrick, only missing a couple of matches due to suspension and rotation.
Casemiro remains a pivotal figure for Brazil as well and is anticipated to represent his country at the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
An analysis by Manchester United correspondent Mark Critchley highlighted the peculiar nature of signing a 30-year-old for £60 million with such a lucrative wage. While this might seem unwise from a business perspective, it is important to note the transformative impact Casemiro had in his initial months. He played a crucial role in helping United win the Carabao Cup and secure Champions League qualification during his first year with the club.
Despite facing challenges, including criticism of his performance at times, Casemiro rebounded from a difficult second season and has continuously demonstrated his professionalism. His recent man-of-the-match performance in the Manchester derby showcased that he still has much to offer the team. As he prepares for his departure, Manchester United will need to find a suitable replacement, which is also expected to be a substantial financial commitment.
