On Tuesday, the nation marks the five-year anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, a pivotal moment in American history. In observance of this day, residents of Hendersonville came together last Saturday to remember those affected by the riot and to advocate for the prevention of similar events in the future.

The gathering, organized by Persist of Henderson County, took place in downtown Hendersonville, where attendees held signs and listened to speakers sharing their reflections on the significance of the day. Participants emphasized the importance of utilizing their rights as citizens to make positive changes in the country.

Laura Bannister, the logistics manager for Persist, urged people to engage actively in the democratic process. “Write to your congressman, write to your senators, but mainly get out and vote. The midterms are coming up this year,” she stated. This call to action highlights the critical role that civic participation plays in shaping the political landscape.

This year also brings several significant elections in North Carolina, most notably the competitive U.S. Senate race, which will be closely monitored by voters and analysts alike. As the anniversary of the Capitol riot prompts reflection and dialogue, it serves as a reminder of the value of civic engagement and the power of the electorate.
