The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 2 has issued a warning for travelers to reconsider their travel plans as a significant winter storm is anticipated from Sunday, February 15, through Wednesday. Chris Woodward, the public information officer for Caltrans, described this storm as the most impactful event of the season for those planning to hit the roads, urging individuals to stay off them if possible.

Travelers heading towards the coastal regions are expected to encounter snowy conditions outside the valley areas, particularly near Buckhorn, Oregon Mountain, Berry Summit, and Lord Ellis. Interstate 5 is predicted to be hardest hit, with possible screenings and a potential closure.

To prepare for the impending weather, Caltrans crews have been proactive in their efforts, working ahead of the storm to mitigate hazardous conditions. Woodward noted that maintenance teams are treating key areas of the road that are prone to icy conditions. “As snow begins to fall, we typically apply cinders, which are ground volcanic rock that enhances traction, along with brine applications,” Woodward explained.

Despite these preparations, Woodward stressed the importance for drivers to be equipped for winter driving conditions. He advised having tire chains and being knowledgeable about how to install them, as road conditions can change suddenly. Drivers are also encouraged to check road status using Quick Maps before setting out.

Ultimately, the message is clear: staying home and avoiding travel altogether may be the safest choice during this winter storm.
