Tui Wailevu Ratu Sitiveni Niumataiwalu has strongly advocated for the introduction of the death penalty for drug offenders, emphasizing that current penalties are insufficient to deter criminal activity. He expressed the need for the government to adopt a much stricter approach to combat the rampant drug issue, stating, “Harsher punishments need to be introduced. Some are calling for corporal punishment or even the death penalty. Otherwise, people will not stop.”
Ratu Sitiveni voiced concerns that financial penalties have become ineffective as a deterrent, noting, “Human beings only stop when they see a real barrier. Money these days does not stop anyone from getting into the drug business.” He urged citizens to avoid drugs, assuring them that law enforcement will catch those engaging in illegal activities.
He further commented that while harsher measures may be necessary for repeat offenders, it is crucial to consider the impact on families and communities. He suggested utilizing rehabilitation facilities such as St Giles, where psychologists and professionals can assist individuals with substance abuse issues before resorting to extreme penalties.
Pita Saladoka, the youth vice-president of the province, echoed Ratu Sitiveni’s call for harsher penalties as a means of protecting the youth. He pointed out that drug use is on the rise, particularly among teenagers, and highlighted the importance of raising awareness within families and communities. Saladoka believes that stricter penalties will help control drug use among the youth, who are particularly susceptible to influence.
Another young advocate, Osea Lautiki, joined in stressing the necessity of stronger penalties, remarking that increased severity in punishment would encourage individuals to act more cautiously. He warned of the dangers of drugs, particularly for teenagers, who may be more vulnerable to addiction due to the harmful chemicals involved.
