CHAPEL HILL — UNC basketball coach Hubert Davis is yet to confirm the status of Caleb Wilson for the upcoming showdown against rival Duke in the regular-season finale. Speaking to reporters on March 5, Davis mentioned that while the 6-foot-10 freshman forward is making progress with individual workouts, he has not yet been cleared for full-contact, five-on-five practices.

“I have no idea,” Davis said regarding Wilson’s availability for the match on Saturday, March 7, which is set for 6:30 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The game is significant, featuring the 17th-ranked Tar Heels (24-6, 12-5 ACC) facing off against the top-ranked Blue Devils (28-2, 16-1).

Caleb Wilson, who has been sidelined since injuring his left hand during a loss to Miami over three weeks ago, expressed his eagerness to compete at Duke, stating, “I’m really excited to go play at Duke, too. I like to be the villain in games, and I just think it’s going to be a lot of fun.” As the matchup draws near, fans are eager to get updates, with the initial ACC availability report due out on March 6 at 8 p.m., and the final injury list set to come two hours prior to tipoff.

Duke head coach Jon Scheyer commented on Wilson’s potential impact, acknowledging the talent he brings if he plays. “He’s a really good player,” Scheyer noted, recalling Wilson’s impressive performance during their first game against UNC, where he contributed significantly. However, he emphasized that Duke must maintain focus regardless of Wilson’s presence, stating, “It’s having great respect for him, but also great respect if he doesn’t play in knowing how good they’ve been and how they’ve won.”

In Wilson’s absence, the Tar Heels have found success, winning five out of six games. Nevertheless, Wilson has been a standout performer this season, averaging 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. His averages rise further against ranked opponents, where he scored 20 points and pulled down 6.8 rebounds. His last encounter with Duke resulted in 23 points, showcasing his capacity to perform under pressure.

As anticipation builds for this high-stakes matchup, the potential return of Caleb Wilson adds an exciting layer to an already thrilling rivalry. The outcome will not only impact conference standings but could also amplify the excitement heading into postseason play.
