The Milwaukee Bucks continue to face significant challenges as they struggle offensively in the absence of star player Giannis Antetokounmpo. Since Giannis first sustained a groin injury, compounded by a subsequent calf strain, the Bucks have seen a notable decline in their scoring output. As of Monday night, they have failed to average more than 116.5 points per game, a mark set by the struggling Boston Celtics, who are currently ranked 17th in the league.

Over the last 16 games, the Bucks have only managed to exceed that average once, during a loss to the Washington Wizards. This represents a stark contrast to their earlier games, where they consistently performed at a higher level with Giannis on the court. With his absence, the team’s offensive efficiency has plummeted, leading to a disappointing record of 11-18 and just three wins in their last 16 outings.

Their recent performances have been particularly disheartening; the Bucks averaged a mere 95.7 points across their last three games. In their latest matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, they experienced an alarming scoring drought that lasted nearly seven minutes, contributing to a 20-0 run by Minnesota. This was the second such drought the team has faced within just three games.

While the offense has struggled significantly, it is worth noting that the team’s defense has remained relatively steady, allowing only 214 points against the Raptors and Timberwolves combined, a result of reduced fouling leading to fewer free throws for opponents. However, even with a defense that ranks decently, the Bucks are currently 24th in the league for points per game and 22nd in both offensive and defensive ratings.

The complications are not solely due to Giannis’ absence; the team has also faced challenges with Kevin Porter Jr. being sidelined for parts of the season. Even when Giannis was playing, the Bucks dealt with issues like stagnant possessions which have only worsened without him.

To turn their fortunes around, the Bucks must address several key areas, including fouls, rebounds, and turnovers, but it may not be enough to avoid a trades overhaul if they wish to prevent a lingering below .500 record. The urgency for a solution is palpable, as the team’s trajectory without immediate action appears grim.

Despite the current challenges, there is still hope that with strategic changes and reinforcements, the Bucks can regain their footing and become a competitive force in the league once again.
