As late February approaches and March draws near, every game played carries significant weight for teams aiming to solidify their positions for the NCAA Tournament. While some schools are in pursuit of coveted No. 1 seeds, others are scrambling to secure vital hosting spots. The stakes are high as teams work towards earning a place in the 68-team field.
On Sunday, several bubble teams made noteworthy strides, particularly within the ACC. Entering the day, Duke and Louisville had put together a stellar combined record of 29-1 in conference play, with their only blemish being Louisville’s narrow loss to Duke. This dynamic shifted, however, as Louisville fell to Virginia on their home turf, and Duke suffered a defeat at Clemson. These outcomes proved pivotal, marking significant victories for Virginia and Clemson. The Cavaliers elevated themselves to a No. 10 seed, moving out of the Last Four In, while the Tigers achieved their third Quad-1 victory, solidifying their place in the tournament conversation.
Both teams face a challenging week ahead, but a single win could ensure their inclusion as the conference tournaments approach. While some teams were focused on offense, others concentrated on defensive strategies to maintain their spots. Notably, Villanova dominated Marquette, allowing only 39 points, and is now just one win away from securing their bid at Seton Hall.
Nebraska, having experienced a rough patch with six consecutive losses, managed to turn the tide by edging out Washington 66-65, thanks to a last-minute three-point shot from Britt Prince. This victory provides a much-needed boost to Nebraska’s hopes of making the tournament.
However, not all teams fared well. Mississippi State, suffering a staggering 50-point defeat to Texas, fell out of the projected field and is now the first team out, facing a tough schedule ahead with games against Texas A&M and LSU.
As of February 24, the following teams are considered the last four in: Colorado, Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Arizona State. Meanwhile, the first four out includes Mississippi State, Stanford, South Dakota State, and Richmond, while BYU, Utah, Kansas, and California round out the next four out list.
The pressing question now is which teams currently on the outside can still secure at-large bids without winning their respective conference tournaments. Mississippi State holds the best position, especially if teams within the tournament field stumble. Stanford, once a projected No. 7 seed, has seen a significant decline with eight losses in their last ten games but remains in contention, hosting Clemson in what could be a crucial matchup for both teams.
For South Dakota State and Richmond, victories against North Dakota State and Rhode Island, respectively, are essential to maintain any flicker of at-large hopes alive. Conversely, wins by North Dakota State and Rhode Island could bolster their chances, particularly in seeking an automatic bid.
In terms of seeding for the upcoming conference tournaments, South Carolina is set to claim the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament. Unprecedentedly, five teams from a single conference—Texas, Vanderbilt, LSU, and Oklahoma—are ranked in the top seven of the AP poll at this point in the season. Meanwhile, the ACC, Big 12, and Big Ten also feature highly significant matchups, particularly in the ACC, where nine teams are vying for a top-four seed, which could prove crucial for bubble teams.
In the Ivy League, Columbia must win their final two games to secure the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, while other teams across the nation hope for missteps from Columbia to open up more at-large opportunities as the season concludes. As the NCAA Tournament looms closer, the excitement and intensity of college basketball ramp up, promising thrilling finishes and potential surprises on the road to March Madness.
