Industry veteran Bruce Straley has opened up about his departure from Naughty Dog, revealing that his desire for ownership over his creative work played a significant role in his decision. Speaking with Polygon, Straley explained that his choice to leave the studio responsible for iconic titles such as The Last of Us and Uncharted was driven by two main factors: a quest for ownership and a need for new challenges outside the established frameworks of his former company.

Having spent 18 years at Naughty Dog, Straley was instrumental in the studio’s rise, contributing to beloved franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter before taking on roles such as co-art director for Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, and later, game director for its sequels and The Last of Us. Despite his successful tenure, Straley felt a sense of stagnation. “I had been there 18 years. That’s a long time for anybody to be anywhere,” he commented, expressing that he was often confronted with the same creative challenges and felt the need to explore different artistic avenues.

Straley’s desire for a fresh direction led him to seek independence rather than transitioning to another AAA studio, which he envisioned as potentially fraught with its own bureaucratic hurdles. In 2022, he established Wildflower Interactive, and the studio recently announced its first game, Coven of the Chicken Foot, at The Game Awards 2025.

Reflecting on his decision, Straley noted the strength and quality of Naughty Dog as a studio, recognizing it as a leader in its genre. However, he ultimately desired a creative environment that allowed for more personal involvement and artistic freedom.

In 2023, Straley expressed his disappointment regarding not being credited for his contributions to The Last of Us television adaptation, emphasizing the importance of recognizing creators’ roles in collaborative projects. His comments also touched on the broader issue of industry practices, suggesting that unionization could be a solution to ensure that creators receive proper acknowledgment and remuneration for their work.

Straley’s journey illustrates the balance between creativity and control in the gaming industry, highlighting the challenges many developers face in seeking artistic fulfillment. As he forges a new path with Wildflower Interactive, there’s optimism in the gaming community for the innovative experiences that may arise from his independent ventures.
