The British Army Rugby Sevens team is reaping the benefits of years of hard work and commitment, largely due to the foundational efforts of former players like Apolosi Satala, a 2005 World Cup 7s champion, and Isoa Damudamu, who represented England in 7s. These pioneers were instrumental in discussions about establishing a British Army 7s team during their playing days, setting the stage for this ambitious project.

Joe Nayacavou, a former Scotland 7s player with an impressive history, including participation in 38 World Series events, leads the squad as head coach. Under his expertise, the team is gearing up for its debut at the McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s, which starts on Thursday in Sigatoka.

Nayacavou, who was part of the team that won the London Sevens championship in 2016/17 and also participated in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, highlighted the importance of competing in Fiji. “Although the game was created in Scotland, we believe that Fiji is the ultimate test for the best,” he stated. The players have already experienced the intense heat of Suva, recognizing that they will need to acclimate as they head into their competition in Sigatoka.

As the British Army team prepares to face off against Elia Canakaivata’s Drua in their opening match at 11:40 AM at Lawaqa Park, fans can tune in to witness this exciting encounter live on FBC Sports. This competition represents a significant milestone for the team as they embrace the rich spirit and formidable challenge of Fijian rugby sevens, promising to deliver thrilling moments for both players and supporters alike.
