CLEVELAND, OHIO – SEPTEMBER 26: Catcher Jonah Heim #28 of the Texas Rangers throws out Kyle Manzardo #9 of the Cleveland Guardians at first to end the third inning at Progressive Field on September 26, 2025 in Cleveland, Ohio.

In an unexpected move, the Atlanta Braves have signed veteran catcher Jonah Heim to a one-year contract as pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in North Port. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com first broke the news, confirming that Heim had indeed joined the team, although the financial details of the agreement have yet to be disclosed.

Heim became a free agent after the Texas Rangers non-tendered him following two challenging seasons. The 2025 season saw him struggle offensively, posting a batting line of .213/.271/.332. Despite some positive production typically associated with catchers, his defensive metrics were lackluster, continuing a downward trend from 2024.

However, it is important to note that Heim is not far removed from a standout 2023 season where he achieved a batting line of .258/.317/.438, including 18 home runs. His defensive capabilities at that time were also notably strong, ranking in the top percentiles for metrics such as Caught Stealing Above Average and Framing. If Heim can recapture some of that form, he could be a valuable asset behind the plate for the Braves.

With Sean Murphy currently sidelined, Heim’s experience could be crucial as he competes for the backup catcher role against non-roster invitees Chadwick Tromp and Sandy León. His presence not only enhances the competition but also provides valuable mentorship for the Braves’ young catcher, Drake Baldwin, as the team heads toward the regular season.

This signing reflects the Braves’ commitment to maintaining depth and experience in their squad as they prepare for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
