The Toronto Blue Jays are exploring the possibility of enhancing their already impressive pitching rotation, despite recent offseason acquisitions that included Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce. MLB insider Jon Heyman suggests that the Blue Jays may look to pursue pitchers Zac Gallen, Max Scherzer, or Chris Bassitt after missing out on Framber Valdez, who recently signed with the Detroit Tigers.

Heyman described the Blue Jays as “big winners” this offseason, particularly noting their effort to make a competitive push towards returning to the World Series. “They made a late run at Valdez,” Heyman stated, pointing to the organization’s commitment to strengthening their roster. He indicated that Gallen, who had a notable All-Star season in 2023 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, could be an attractive option for Toronto. Gallen’s previous season record of 13-15 with a 4.83 ERA across 33 starts showcases his durability, as he has consistently delivered 30+ starts in three of the last four seasons.

Additionally, the possibility of a reunion with Scherzer, who provided valuable playoff experience for Toronto last year, remains on the table. At 41 years old, Scherzer is contemplating his future and has expressed an interest in pitching again in 2025. He is reportedly waiting for the right opportunity and is not opposed to signing after the season begins if it means aligning with a preferred team. Scherzer’s performance with the Blue Jays last season included a 5-5 record and a 3.77 ERA in three playoff starts, highlighting his ability to deliver in critical moments.

The Blue Jays’ rotation currently appears robust, featuring Cease, Ponce, Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, and Trey Yesavage, with Jose Berrios still in the mix and Bowden Francis showcasing potential as a starter. While adding another pitcher might seem unnecessary given their depth, the Blue Jays could enhance their strength for the upcoming season, positioning themselves favorably for a successful 2026. The team’s proactive approach reflects a commitment to not just maintaining, but elevating their on-field performance.
