The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has taken aim at Billie Eilish following her recent Instagram posts that criticized the agency, especially regarding its Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) unit, after a controversial shooting incident in Minneapolis. Eilish referred to ICE as a “terrorist group” in the wake of a shooting that led to the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good during an ICE operation.
In response, DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin released a statement asserting that Eilish had not reviewed crucial footage from the incident, which she claims confirms the agency’s position that Good was jeopardizing the safety of law enforcement by attempting to run over an officer with her vehicle. McLaughlin stated, “The American people can watch this video with their own eyes and ears and judge for themselves,” while emphasizing that the officer acted in self-defense.
The shooting occurred on January 7, and McLaughlin highlighted that the officer, Jonathan Ross, was defending himself and his colleagues. Eilish’s posts included reshares from other creators, which depicted ICE’s actions as detrimental, calling for the agency’s abolition and demanding justice for Good’s death.
McLaughlin defended ICE’s operational protocols, arguing that families are not separated during enforcement actions, stating, “This is consistent with past administrations’ immigration enforcement.” She attributed a substantial increase in assaults against ICE officers to what she described as inflammatory rhetoric.
The societal response has been significant, with many expressing outrage at the footage of Good’s deadly encounter. Numerous residents of Minneapolis gathered to mourn her loss, amplifying calls against ICE’s presence in their community. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed strong opposition to the enforcement officials, condemning their actions during a press conference.
