Two men, Lagani Rabukawaqa and Saimoni Macedru, were denied bail after their appearance at the Suva Magistrate’s Court, where they face charges of aggravated robbery. The prosecution objected to their bail, requesting time to prepare a formal response, which the court has granted until January 6.

During the proceedings, Tobia Ravuiwa from the Legal Aid Commission represented Mr. Rabukawaqa and requested permission to submit a formal bail application. He argued that his client’s arrest followed identification and stated that Mr. Rabukawaqa has an alibi, supported by his sister, who is ready to testify that he was at home during the time of the alleged offense. Additionally, Mr. Ravuiwa pointed out that his client wishes to secure bail to pursue further tertiary education at a Polytech institute, where his father works as a lecturer.

However, the court denied bail for both men due to the prosecution’s pending objections. Rabukawaqa and Macedru are jointly charged with the robbery of a 50-year-old man, from whom they allegedly stole a watch and nine dollars in cash at Top Shop in Raiwai, Suva. The case has been adjourned to January 16, and both men will remain at the remand center until then.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts of the justice system to balance the rights of the accused with public safety concerns. The adjournment provides an opportunity for both sides to prepare their cases adequately, ensuring a fair hearing in the coming months.
