Returning to school after a long hiatus presents a considerable challenge for many adults, but for Reena Ben, it became a life-changing experience. Growing up in Toorak, Ms. Ben attended Nehru Memorial School and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, where she initially struggled with her academic performance. She recalled, “I passed, but my marks were only just above the pass level, and I was never happy with them.” This early disappointment set the stage for her future endeavors.
After graduating from high school, Ms. Ben entered the workforce, taking a position as an office clerk at Shanti Lal Brothers and later transitioning to an accounts clerk role. However, she realized that her unsatisfactory academic background was hindering her career advancements. Driven by a desire to improve her qualifications, she explored educational opportunities and was directed to the Nabua Matua Secondary School program, designed specifically for adult learners.
This choice marked a significant turning point in her life. In 2024, more than twenty years after completing high school, Ms. Ben excelled in Year 12, achieving first place in the annual examinations and receiving both a gold medal and the top academic award. Reflecting on her triumph, she stated, “Coming back and achieving this result showed me that nothing is impossible if you work hard.”
Although previously engaged in part-time studies at the University of the South Pacific, her recent Year 12 accomplishments held special significance for her. Ms. Ben expressed deep gratitude for her family’s support, which was crucial in balancing her work, family obligations, and studies.
With her academic ambitions now realized, Ms. Ben is intent on pursuing a career as a primary school teacher. She hopes to empower young students, especially those who lack confidence, to recognize and harness their potential. “I want to help both the students who are doing well and those who are struggling, so that every child has the chance to succeed,” she emphasized.
In addition to her educational goals, Ms. Ben aspires to inspire other adults, particularly women who may feel disheartened by their past academic experiences. She firmly believes in the importance of second chances, asserting, “It is never too late. If you have the ambition and are willing to work hard, you can change your future.” Her journey stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and dedication, illustrating that setbacks can be overcome, and dreams can be achieved at any stage in life.
