Career diplomat Jeff Roach has officially taken on the role of Australia’s new High Commissioner to the Solomon Islands. Today, in Honiara, he was welcomed by Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, where the two leaders engaged in discussions about key areas for enhancing bilateral cooperation.

In their meeting, Manele and Roach affirmed the ongoing commitment of both nations to a respectful and constructive partnership. Roach brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having most recently spearheaded Australian initiatives related to the Tuvalu-Australia Falepili Union and the Nauru-Australia Treaty. His past roles include serving as High Commissioner to Vanuatu and as Deputy Head of Mission at the United Nations in Geneva.

Manele emphasized the significance of cooperation as Solomon Islands transitions from Least Developed Country (LDC) status in 2027. “Trade and economic cooperation is very important to Solomon Islands as we move towards LDC graduation, and PACER Plus remains important and critical for our country,” he stated. The Prime Minister noted that a Transition Strategy is already in place to facilitate the phasing out of special support measures allocated to LDCs.

In addition, Manele highlighted the value of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, which has played a crucial role in addressing youth unemployment. He suggested that there are promising opportunities to explore within Early Childhood Education, further building on the success of Solomon Islanders currently employed in Australia’s aged care sector.

“Solomon Islands appreciates the opportunities for our people under the PALM scheme, and we are looking at further areas for cooperation including Early Childhood Education,” Manele remarked. He also expressed gratitude towards Australia for its ongoing support in various sectors, including project financing, health, education, policing, and infrastructure.

This partnership marks a significant step forward in strengthening ties between Australia and the Solomon Islands, opening doors for mutual growth and development as both countries look towards a collaborative future.
